MOSCOW, March 20 - RAPSI. The magistrate court of Moscow's Khamovnichesky District has put Yury Piotrovsky under restraint for throwing ink over two icons at Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral in September 2012, RAPSI reports from the court.

The court has ruled that Piotrovsky, who worked at a Russian culture center in Munich, is guilty of "vandalism incited by religious hatred" and has sentenced him to confinement in his home city of St. Petersburg for the period of one year. He must notify the police if he plans to go out of the city.

The court also banned Piotrovsky from visiting Christian religious sites for one year. However, he was released from detention because the six months he spent at a pretrial facility were taken into account.

Piotrovsky, 62, threw two bottles of ink over the Nativity and the Savior icons in the cathedral on September 16, 2012. The icons belong to the city of Moscow and have been valued at over 580,000 rubles ($18,810). After the man was detained, investigators learned that he was registered at a mental institution where he had been receiving treatment.

Christ the Savior Cathedral Archpriest Mikhail Ryazantsev told RIA Novosti that the icons have already been restored.
