The Arctic Sunrise hearing at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

On October 21, 2013, the Netherlands filed a request with the Hamburg-based International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to inflict provisional measures in the dispute over Dutch-flagged Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise. The vessel was seized by Russian border guards on September 19, a day after two Greenpeace activists scaled a drilling rig in the Pechora Sea, the southeastern part of the Barents Sea. The Netherlands is demanding the release of the ship and its crew and the withdrawal of hooliganism charges against the 30 crew members.

Bolshoi soloist Dmitrichenko on trial for acid attack

Sulfuric acid was heaved in the face of Bolshoi Theater artistic director Sergei Filin as he attempted to enter his home in January 2013. As a result of the assault, Filin suffered third degree burns to his face and eyes. In March the Interior Ministry announced the arrests of the alleged perpetrators of the attack. The leading Bolshoi dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko was one of them.

Greenpeace activists face piracy charges

Dutch-flagged Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise was seized by Russian border guards on September 19 within Russia's exclusive economic zone, a day after two Greenpeace activists scaled a drilling rig in the Pechora Sea, the southeastern part of the Barents Sea. Federal investigators have initially launched a maritime piracy case against the vessel’s crew.

Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova loses parole appeal

The Supreme Court of Republic of Mordovia upheld a previous ruling to reject Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova's request for parole. Tolokonnikova was sentenced to two years in prison along with two other punk group members for a protest performance at the altar of the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow.

Opposition activist Navalny sentenced to five years

Whistleblowing blogger turned opposition leader Alexei Navalny was charged with the theft of over 10,000 cubic meters of timber, which was allegedly stolen from Kirovles company between May and September 2009. The case was initially dropped, but was revived when an inquiry was launched by Investigative Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin.
