Eight Russian opposition activists were found guilty of mass rioting and using violence against authorities over a 2012 anti-Kremlin rally Friday, as more than 100 people who had gathered outside the courtroom to show their support for the defendants were detained by police.

Over 400 people were arrested and scores injured in the Bolotnaya Square protest that turned violent on the eve of Vladimir Putin's inauguration to a third presidential term in May 2012. Dozens were later charged with inciting mass riots and using violence against law enforcement officers. Prosecutors have demanded to find eight remaining defendants in the 2012 Bolotnaya riots case guilty of participating in the riots and assaulting the police.

Pussy Riot members Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova have been pardoned pursuant to a broad amnesty spearheaded by Russian President Vladimir Putin and adopted by the State Duma earlier in December. The amnesty was arranged to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
