KIEV, May 24 (RAPSI) - The Kiev District Administrative Court held Thursday that no unofficial public events can be held alongside the city’s official Kiev Day celebrations on May 25, including an LGBT pride parade.

The Ukrainian LGBT community requested permission to hold an Equality Rally on May 25, but the municipal authorities turned to the court seeking to ban the event on that very day as more than 200 other events are scheduled to be held.

The city administration vowed that the rally could be held any other day, while its organizers intend to appeal the ban.

Meanwhile polls show that Ukrainian society is highly intolerant of the LGBT community and the overwhelming majority of citizens are against same-sex marriage. Several other attempts to hold pride parades in Kiev earlier failed.

The Kiev municipal authorities are reportedly concerned about the prospect of mass riots as a result of holding the gay pride parade.

An attempt to hold the LGBT rally in the capital of neighboring Georgia on May 17 was disrupted as tens of thousands  - members of the clergy among them – took to the streets in protest. The clashes resulted in 28 injuries, including those sustained by three policemen and one journalist. Several criminal and administrative cases were launched into the riot.
