MOSCOW, June 23 (RAPSI) – State Duma lawmaker Vasily Tarasyuk (LDPR) has submitted to Russia's lower house of parliament a bill that would prohibit adoption for reward or compensation, RIA Novosti reported.

According to an explanatory note to the bill, that would amend the Family Code, consent for adoption must not be induced by payment or compensation of any kind (Article 4 of the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption dated May 29, 1993). The proposed bill would add this provision to Russian law.

Also, the amendments would require that parents can only consent to adoption no sooner than a month after the child is born.

Tarasyuk believes that the psychological state of women during pregnancy and immediately after giving birth is a delicate issue, and that new mothers need time to become adjusted to their status before making a decision on possible adoption.

The MP believes that these amendments to family law would prevent parents from rashly consenting to the adoption of their child.
