MOSCOW, September 17 (RAPSI) – The St. Petersburg City Court ordered a penitentiary medical unit to pay 500,000 rubles (about $8,000) in compensation to the mother of a detainee, who had died from failure to provide medical aid in the detention center Kresty, attorney Vitaly Cherkasov told RAPSI on Tuesday.

The appeals court increased the moral compensation sum initially awarded by a first instance court in May by 300,000 rubles, the lawyer said.

The defunct man stood charged with illegal drug trafficking. Independent forensic medical examiners found numerous violations committed by the penitentiary medics including breaching confusional insanity medical aid standards, he added.

The forensic examination showed that the detainee needed mental treatment, but was denied it, Cherkasov noted.
