MOSCOW, August 19 (RAPSI) - Attorney of Egyptian ex-president Hosni Mubarak says that his client may be set free this week, after the corruption charges against him will be dropped, Reuters reports on Monday.

The corruption charges against Mubarak and his two sons concern the embezzlement of over 1 billion Egyptian pounds (over $150 million) in government funds. According to the investigators, they took part in a corrupt scheme to embezzle the funds allocated for the renovation and reconstruction of presidential palaces. Fake documents were sent to the auditing authorities, while Mubarak and his family used the embezzled funds to buy or to build new properties.

On June 2, 2012, Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly el-Adly were sentenced to life in prison for ordering the use of live bullets during the dispersal of protesters in January 2011, but an appeals court later overturned the sentence and ordered a retrial.

Mubarak was also charged with selling gas to Israel at a reduced price.
