ST. PETERSBURG, October 23 (RAPSI, Mikhail Telekhov) – Prosecutors have organized a check over the death of seals on the Gulf of Finland shore, the St. Petersburg environmental prosecutor's office told RAPSI on Monday.

The inspection is conducted in cooperation with the regional directorate of the Federal Fishery Agency, the statement reads.

According to case papers, two seals hacked to death with an axe were found on the shore of the Gulf of Finland in the Leningrad Region on October 21.

The seals were allegedly killed by fishermen, director of the Baltic Ringed Seal Friends Fund Vyacheslav Alekseyev told RAPSI. According to Alekseyev, 50 seals were killed in a year including ringed seals.
