MOSCOW, April 25 (RAPSI) –  Amount of registered terrorism crimes increased by 45% in Russia in 2016, RIA Novosti reported Tuesday citing the report of Prosecutor General Yury Chaika on law and order.

According to statistical data analysis, the number of crimes of terrorist and extremist nature increases in Russia annually.

Last year, 2,227 terrorism offenses and 1,450 extremism crimes were registered by Russian authorities, the Prosecutor General’s report reads.

The rise in crime for the last 5 years is caused by enhancement of law enforcement agencies’ operating efficiency in detecting involvement of Russian nationals and foreigners in terrorist activities abroad, particularly in Syria and Iraq, but not by increased terrorism in Russia, according to the report.

A considerable number of terrorism crimes registered in 2016 is connected with revealing of new criminal episodes with involvement of individuals, who had been earlier convicted of terrorism and participation illegal armed groups.
