MOSCOW, April 28 (RAPSI) – The final charges have been brought against Boris Kolesnikov, a police general who committed suicide after being detained for suspected abuse of power last year, RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday, citing a source familiar with the situation.

Kolesnikov, former deputy head of the Interior Ministry’s Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Department, was one of the key suspects in a high-profile case on bribe extortion and abuse of power at the department.

According to the source, the ruling on the 21 charges brought against Kolesnikov was delivered to his mother, who is his legal representative, on Tuesday.

The source said the investigation against the deceased general continued at the request of his mother.

The Constitutional Court allows the investigation of cases against deceased persons and subsequent trial at the request of relatives.

Final charges were also brought against Denis Sugrobov, former head of the Interior Ministry’s Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Department. The defendants will have access to the case materials before they are forwarded to court.

According to investigators, Sugrobov and his deputy Kolesnikov tried to provoke a Federal Security Service (FSB) officer by offering him $10,000 a month for his protection. Sugrobov was charged with organizing a criminal group, abuse of power and bribery last May.

Kolesnikov was arrested in February 2014. In June, he jumped out of a window during questioning at the Investigative Committee in June. Later the Basmanny District Court said no evidence was found of assisted suicide.

In late August, Moscow’s Basmanny District Court seized assets owned by Sugrobov and Kolesnikov, which have been reportedly estimated at over 300 million rubles (approximately $5.8 million).

Sugrobov, 38, is one of the youngest police generals. Kolesnikov was 36 when he was promoted to general.
