MOSCOW, December 17 (RAPSI) – The UK has refused to return embezzled funds to Russia and extradite people who are being prosecuted, Alexander Bastrykin, chairman of Investigative Committee, said in his address to the lawmakers of the upper house of parliament on Wednesday.

He told the Federation Council that he had received explanations to this effect from the Russian ambassador to the UK. Bastrykin said that only a very small part of the funds embezzled in the 1990s have been repaid to the budget.

The most high-profile case is that of late tycoon Boris Berezovsky, who was prosecuted in Russia in connection with a number of large-scale embezzlement and corruption cases. The late businessman took refuge in the UK.  Berezovsky was found dead by his bodyguard in the bathroom of his house on Mill Lane, Ascot, Berkshire, in March 2013.

Bastrykin said in September 2014 that there is little hope the funds embezzled by Berezovsky would ever return to Russia.
