MOSCOW, July 10 (RAPSI) – Several days after an agent of the German intelligence agency BND was arrested for spying for the US, prosecutors conducted searches in Berlin in connection with a second suspected US spy. Data storage devices have been confiscated during these searches, German federal prosecutor spokesman Markus Koehler told RIA Novosti.

On Wednesday, Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper wrote about a second suspected US spy, allegedly an employee of the German defense ministry, saying that it was believed to be more serious than last week’s.

The first suspect, a 31-year-old BND agent, has admitted to passing confidential information to a US contact, including details of a parliamentary committee’s investigation of former NSA intelligence contractor Edward Snowden’s allegations of American spying in Germany.

Koehler said the second suspect had not been arrested yet, adding that on Wednesday the police used a search warrant to enter and search residential and office space in Berlin for evidence of spying.

“They have collected evidence, including a PC and many data storage devices, which they are currently analyzing,” Koehler said, with no further comment. He did not say if the suspect had been interrogated.

US Ambassador John Emerson visited the German foreign ministry on Wednesday to discuss the spy scandal. He was summoned there for the first time the week before.
