MOSCOW, July 8 (RAPSI) – The arrest of Russian national Roman Seleznev on the Maldive Islands is an unfriendly move, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that it is not the first time that the United States “has actually abducted a Russian national.”

According to Russian mass media, Roman is the son of Valery Seleznev, a State Duma deputy from the Liberal Democratic Party.

AP announced on Monday night that Moscow-born Roman Seleznev, 30, had been charged with hacking into retail point-of-sale systems to install malicious software to steal credit card numbers and with operating servers and international carding forum websites to facilitate the theft and sale of stolen credit card data. According to AP, he was taken to Guam for an initial court hearing on July 22.

The Foreign Ministry said it expected an explanation from the Maldives government. “Russian diplomats have been working to find out the circumstances of Roman Seleznev’s arrest and to ensure his early return to Russia. We have requested that the US authorities provide an intelligible explanation of the incident, guarantee the rights of the Russian national and provide consular access to him,” a ministry representative said.
