KIEV, March 19 (RAPSI) - Ukrainian Prosecutor-General's Office has launched a probe into the alleged attack by a group of members of the Ukrainian political party “Svoboda,” including some members of the parliament, against Alexander Panteleymonov, the president of the National Television Company of Ukraine (NTU) that forced his resignation according to a statement released by the office.

An alleged incident, a recording of which surfaced on the Internet, took place on March 18. Two of the attackers were identified as Igor Miroshnychenko, Deputy Head of the Parliament's Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information, and lawmaker Bogdan Benyuk.

The incident was registered by the Prosecutor-General's Office. The probe was launched on the grounds of deliberate resistance to the professional activities of journalists and hooliganism in accordance with the Ukrainian Criminal Code, according to the statement.

The alleged attack has attracted international criticism.

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic wrote a letter to acting Ukrainian president Turchinov to voice her discontent. “I am appalled by this outrageous action, which goes against all media freedom values and cannot be tolerated... This is a particularly serious incident as some attackers not only represent the legislative branch of power, but also are members of the freedom of speech and information committee of the Parliament,” she wrote, as quoted by an OSCE statement released Wednesday.
