MOSCOW, August 27 (RIA Novosti) – A man detained by police after an automatic rifle was found in a holdall in a Moscow fitness club was planning a robbery and a kidnapping, a spokesperson for the Russian capital’s local Interior Ministry branch said Tuesday.

The police received an anonymous tipoff on August 23, saying that a man had left a bag containing a rifle and two magazines in a Moscow branch of the fitness chain Zebra, the spokesperson said.

A man police identified as the bag’s owner was detained the next day.

“Police have established that the man detained has been involved in planning serious crimes - abduction for ransom and a robbery on a Moscow jewelry store,” the spokesperson said.
