MOSCOW, December 19 (RAPSI) – The law on sovereign Internet protects network from disconnection from the exterior, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during his press conference on Thursday.

This is not about intrinsic limitations and there is no purpose shut down the Internet, he noted.

In November the law ensuring security and availability of the Russian Internet (Runet) in case of its isolation from the global network came into force. The document was drafted based on “a violent nature of the U.S. National Cybersecurity Strategy adopted in September 2018,” an explanatory note to the initiative reads. The Strategy accuses Russia of committing hacking attacks without evidence, according to the initiative’s sponsors.

The law envisages creation of infrastructure that would assure security and operability of Russian Internet resources in case of inaccessibility of national providers’ connection to foreign root servers.

Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor would be authorized to coordinate provision of stable, secure and seamless Internet throughout Russia.
