MOSCOW, January 12 (RAPSI) – Lawmakers from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) have submitted a bill to the State Duma that would prohibit spouses and children of majority age of high-ranking public officials from running business, RIA Novosti reported.

The current legislation prohibits only persons who hold state posts in Russia from doing business and does not touch their relatives.

The lawmakers believe that the new initiative will become effective on April 1, 2016.

Earlier, Vadim Solovyov, a parliament member representing the Communist Party, announced that he is drafting a similar bill that would prohibit spouses and children of public officials, ministers, governors, and heads of regional parliaments from doing business. He proposed fines of up to 1 million rubles ($13,200) and dismissal from office for those who fictitiously annul their marriage but continue running business together.
