MOSCOW, June 3 (RAPSI) – The Federation Council, Russia’s upper house of parliament, adopted a bill that toughens penalties for ATM skimmers who steal information from bank cards to make fake cards, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday.

The bill stipulates criminal liability for the production or sale of counterfeited bank cards, orders for funds transfer, electronic data storage devices or software for illegal wireless money transactions.

The crime will be punishable by up to five years of compulsory community service, or up to six years’ imprisonment with fines ranging between 100,000 and 300,000 rubles ($1,900 - $5,600), , according to the bill. The same offence committed by a gang will be punishable by up to seven years in jail with a fine of up to 1 million rubles ($18,700).
