MOSCOW, May 21 (RAPSI) - Lithuania's parliament adopted a bill proposed by President Dalia Grybauskaitė setting penalties for 'hostile propaganda', RIA Novosti reported on Thursday.

The legislation, which is set to take effect on October 1, is aimed at adjusting current regulation due to changes in geopolitical situation and boosting information security, according to Lithuanian lawmakers.

The legislation introduces a fine of up to 3% of monthly income for distributing misleading information.

On April 13, Lithuania imposed a three-month ban on broadcasting of all programs of the Russian RTR-Planeta channel. The ban was a result of the Lithuanian Commission on Radio and Television’s decision following a broadcast of the March 12 episode of “Sunday Night” with Vladimir Solovyov.

Lithuanian officials claim that the program “established a view of Ukrainians as a hostile nation, and ignored and downgraded the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

A similar partial ban has been passed on broadcasting by other Russian channels. Last year, broadcasts by NTV Mir Lithuania were banned for three months. The year before, the same ban was imposed on Channel One Baltic, which re-airs Channel One programs.
