MOSCOW, January 21 (RAPSI) – The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has proposed a 20-year driver’s license suspension for certain drunk driving accidents, Izvestia newspaper reported on Wednesday.

According to prosecutors, the maximum suspension period should be the same as the maximum ban on holding office for people with a criminal record, which is 20 years.

State Duma lawmaker Oleg Nilov (A Just Russia party) previously proposed a lifetime license suspension for drunk driver convictions involving the death of a pedestrian.

The arguments of the Prosecutor General’s Office have been put forth in a letter to Nilov, debating the MP’s proposal that a convicted driver’s vehicle be confiscated to compensate the injured party.

Prosecutors said this proposal is in conflict with current law and a related Supreme Court ruling.

Nilov plans to take these arguments into account to upgrade his proposals. He said, though, that he would not withdraw the idea of confiscating the guilty party’s property as compensation.

As of now, drivers who are guilty of killing a person or persons in a car accident can be sentenced to up to seven years’ imprisonment and a suspended license for up to three years.
