MOSCOW, November 25 (RAPSI) – The Liberal Democratic Party has proposed banning officials from buying cars worth more than 1.5 million rubles. The price cap was added to the relevant draft law in time for its second hearing, the proposal co-author Yaroslav Nilov told RIA Novosti on Monday.

The State Duma held the first hearing of the bill, submitted by United Russia deputies in July this year, on November 22. If adopted, the bill will become effective on January 1, 2014.

Mr. Nilov said that this was originally a public initiative discussed by a special commission set up to consider public proposals. This was the first initiative to receive 100,000 votes on the public initiatives website. He said the public voted to limit the cost of cars used by officials and employees of state companies to 1.5 million rubles.

“Strangely, at that time the government commission did not move to formalize the proposal, but in the end, the government did not object to adopting the bill on its first reading,” the deputy said.
