CAIRO, March 3 - RAPSI, Alexander Yelistratov. Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court has ruled against hearing the case of the illegitimacy of the Constitutional Commission. As a result, it has indirectly legalized the Islamist-dominated panel's activity, including the new constitution which it drafted, a court representative told journalists on Sunday.

"The Supreme Constitutional Court has rejected the appeal that the creation and the activity of the Constitutional Commission be recognized as illegal," the source said.

The lawsuit on the illegitimacy of the commission claimed that this body was formed illegally by a parliament which was dissolved in June 2012 by decision of the Supreme Constitutional Court. The court ruled that the elections to the lower house of Egypts parliament were held in violation of legislation.

On December 2, 2012, the Supreme Constitutional Court decided to suspend all cases indefinitely after Islamists prevented judges from entering the court's building. On that day, the court was expected to announce its decision on the legitimacy of the constitutional commission.

The decision on the commission's legitimacy was postponed twice until it was finally announced last Sunday.

Egypt's current constitution was drafted by the constitutional commission and approved by over 60% of Egyptians at a general referendum in December 2012. The text's critics say that it weakens women's rights and minorities' rights. The Muslim Brotherhood believes that the constitution is a necessary step to restoring stability.
