MOSCOW, February 21 - RAPSI. A group of the State Duma lawmakers has proposed a bill instituting a 50,000 rubles fine ($1664) against media and officials for using foreign words instead of Russian analogs, RIA Novosti reported on Thursday.

The lawmakers have suggested amending the law On the Official Language of the Russian Federation and the Code of Administrative Offenses.

A new article to the code has been proposed that describes the misuse of Russian as the country's official language.

The offense may be punishable by a fine of 2,000 rubles ($66.6) to 2,500 rubles($83) for individuals, 4,000 rubles ($133) to 5,000 rubles ($166) for public officials and 40,000 rubles ($1331) to 50,000 rubles ($1664) for companies.

The MPs stressed that TV show and musical event hosts have been overusing foreign words such as "session," "dealer," "boutique," "manager," and "single," among others.

Many borrowed words are regularly used by MPs and by high-level officials during interviews. The lawmakers said it is now common for Russian companies to use foreign words and expressions in their names for no apparent reason.
