MOSCOW, February 14 - RAPSI. The Russian Ministry of Transport has proposed increasing compensation to the families of air crash victims from 2 million rubles to 4.8 million rubles ($159,630), the ministry has stated.

The draft amendments to the Russian Air Code have been posted on the ministrys website. The Russian Air Code was originally drawn up in view of Russia's accession to the Montreal Convention in 1999, formally called the Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air.

The families of those who have died in an air crash currently receive 2 million rubles ($66,510) in compensation. Injured victims are entitled to up to 2 million rubles, depending on the gravity of the injuries.

Compensation for lost, delayed, or damaged baggage will also be calculated according to the new rules. Compensation for the loss of baggage without declared value will amount to around 48,000 rubles ($1,595).

At the moment, passengers can only hope to receive a maximum of 600 rubles (around $20) per kilogram of their damaged baggage.
