MOSCOW, December 2 (RAPSI) - A 50-member commission established to amend the Egyptian Constitution approved the draft of a new constitution for the country on Monday night, said the head of the commission, Amr Moussa.

The draft contains 247 articles, and is expected to be sent in the next two days for approval to the head of Egypt's interim Adly Mansour, and then put to a national referendum. According to Moussa, the document states that national a national referendum will be held six months after the adoption of the constitution. The majority of the commission  members voted to hold presidential elections before parliamentary ones.

Earlier, Moussa said that if passed, the new constitution would, “return to Egypt its soft power and its role in the world.”

Commentaries to each article of the constitution will appear within 48 hours. It is known that new constitution, if approved, would leave the country without the Advisory Council (upper house of parliament) and would prohibit the establishment of religious political parties.

Earlier this week, the official representative of the commission - Mohamed Salmawi said that a referendum on the document may take place in December 2013. According to CEC, the voting process would require only one round and would be completed in two days.

The previous constitution, adopted in December 2012, caused a great deal of controversy. It was canceled by the military that has ousted President Mohamed Morsi in July. The first stage of the work on the new amendments to the constitution has been assigned to legal experts. Later this task was transferred to the commission, which produced a final text of the document.
