MOSCOW, February 18 (RAPSI) – The only limitation on the terms of office of all judges in the Russian Federation, including peace justices, should be their age, that is 70, as at present, Viсtor Momotov, the Chairman of Russia’s Council of Judges, has said addressing the Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian Parliament.

Momotov has pointed out that the Council of Judges had proposed to stop the practice of regular reappointment of peace judges. He has explained that until now each region of Russia has independently set the terms of their tenure, which make as a rule from 3 to 5 years.

The speaker has also added that the current rules infringed on the constitutional principles of irremovability of judges and uniformity of the status of a judge, as well as created opportunities to interfere with the due course of justice.

Momotov has said that the Council of Judges has already prepared a respective bill and will be ready to submit it to the Parliament if it is supported by the Plenum of the Russian Supreme Court.

The Committee of the Federation Council has met to discuss the results of activities of general jurisdiction and commercial courts in 2018, as well as to set the priorities the judiciary is to achieve this year.
