MOSCOW, April 20 (RAPSI) - The Judicial Department at the Supreme Court announced that over 40 individuals were sentenced for treason, espionage and disclosure of state secrets in Russia in 2016, RIA Novosti reported Thursday.

According to the Judicial Department, 14 persons were sentenced for treason, 3 individuals were convicted of spying, 25 of disclosing state secrets. Courts did not deliver acquitting judgements in such cases. However, a criminal case against one person found guilty of treason has been terminated.

Last year, 588 people were convicted of crimes against foundations of the constitutional system and homeland security, according to the judicial statistics.

In 2015, Russian courts sentenced 28 individuals for espionage, treason and disclosure of state secrets.
