VORONEZH, August 28 (RAPSI) – Nadezhda Savchenko, who stands accused of having abetted the killings of two Russian journalists, has challenged the ruling to extend her detention until October 30, her attorney Nikolai Polozov wrote on his Twitter account Thursday.

On Wednesday, a court in the southern city of Voronezh ruled that Savchenko remained in detention center. Savchenko's attorneys asked the court to release her on 1-million-rubles (around $30,000) bail.

Savchenko, 33, a Ukrainian helicopter pilot, was detained when she allegedly entered Russia as a refugee.

She claimes, however, that she was kidnapped. Savchenko was forcibly transported to Russia in handcuffs and with a sack over her head after being captured near Lugansk on June 18, according to her attorneys.

Ukrainian Consul Hennadiy Breskalenko visited Savchenko at the pretrial detention center on July 16 and confirmed the allegations.

Vesti correspondent Igor Kornelyuk and sound engineer Anton Voloshin were killed on June 17 in a mortar attack in the vicinity of Metallist and Mirny, small towns near Lugansk in eastern Ukraine. Both journalists were buried in Moscow.

Savchenko's attorneys say she was not actively involved in the military operations ongoing in the south-eastern regions of Ukraine.
