MOSCOW, May 29 (RAPSI) – An alleged child molester who attacked girls in the entrance halls of residential buildings will be extradited from New York to Moscow on Thursday, an investigation official told RIA Novosti.

Vladimir Letunov is suspected of attacking girls aged between 12 and 17 years, Viktoria Tsyplenkova, a spokesperson for the Investigative Committee Department for Moscow said. He followed them into the main entrance hall of their residential building, joined them in the elevator and then attacked them on the staircase under threat of death.

“His involvement in the crimes has been established thanks to technology,” she said. “The man’s face was taped by a video monitoring camera in 2013 shortly before an assault he is accused of.”

After five people identified the man, the police searched the flat of his mother where they collected DNA samples and subsequently proved his involvement in child molestation crimes, the police claim.

The suspect has been charged in nine counts of child molestation that were committed in Moscow and the Moscow Region in 2007-2013. These charges carry a long sentence.

There is no extradition agreement between Russia and the United States, although Russia proposed signing one. After NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was stuck in Russia, Washington reminded Russia that it had extradited several alleged Russian criminals even though they had no extradition agreement.

Letunov is being extradited over violations of US immigration legislation.
