MOSCOW, May 12 (RAPSI) – The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled Monday that Cyprus is entitled to the compensation of 90 million euros over the military conflict which erupted there in 1974.

Cyprus claimed in several applications filed with the ECHR that Turkey had invaded its territory and occupied a sizeable area in the north of the island. Cyprus alleged violations of the European Convention on Human Rights (Convention) under Articles 1-6, 8-13, Articles 1 and 2 of Protocol No. 1, and Articles 14, 17, and 18. The allegations concerned such issues as Greek-Cypriot missing persons and their relatives, home and property of displaced persons, living conditions of Greek Cypriots in the Karpas region of northern Cyprus.

The ECHR delivered its judgment on the merits of the claim in May 2001. The court held that there had been 14 violations of the Convention by Turkey, arising out of "military operations it had conducted in northern Cyprus in July and August 1974, the continuing division of the territory of Cyprus and the activities of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. The ECHR then adjourned consideration of the issue regarding compenation.
