MOSCOW, January 29 (RAPSI) - Moscow police backed the battery indictment filed by the prosecutor's office against famous MMA fighter and athlete Alexander Emelianenko, RIA Novosti reported Tuesday.

According to Russian criminal law procedure, after the police investigators and the prosecutors sign the indictment, the accused has to receive his own copy before the case can go to court.

A 63-year-old man was hospitalized with multiple injuries in October 2013 following a brawl in a cafe in southeastern Moscow. Emelianenko was later brought in for questioning by police, but released after filing a counter-claim stating he was only defending himself.

The investigation in  the case against Emelianenko had reached completion, but could not be forwarded to the court prior to the suspect‘s appearance before the investigator to review the file and to receive the official indictment, the Moscow police statement reads.

Following the incident, MMA promotion company Legend terminated its contract with Emelianenke, stating he was "unprofessional" and unprepared for an upcoming bout scheduled to take place against Croatian fighter Mirko Filipovic on November 8. He was removed from the card and replaced with another Russian, Alexei Oleinik.

Emelianenko’s career win-loss record is 23:6. He is the younger brother of former MMA champion Fedor Emelianenko.
