KALININGRAD, September 9 (RAPSI) – The District Court of Kaliningrad sentenced a German national who was convicted of having smuggled nearly two kilograms of amphetamine across the border to 9.5 years in prison, the court’s spokesperson told RIA Novosti Monday.

The drugs were stashed in a box of cleaning detergent which he took in his personal vehicle across the border, the court’s representative said. In addition to the amphetamine, which he planned to sell in Kaliningrad, he also had about 80 grams of marijuana for personal use. Soon after crossing the border he was detained by Federal Drug Control Service officers.

The criminal case was initiated on charges of drug smuggling, possession of illegal substances and intent to distribute.

In court the man fully admitted his guilt. The judge considered the confession, the fact that this was the defendant’s first run in with the law, and the wellbeing of him and his relatives in opting for a 9.5 year sentence. The German national will have to serve out his sentence in maximum-security prison.
