“At about 7.30 am a man poured over himself flammable fluid and tried to set it on fire on Povarskaya Street. Police officers who happened to be nearby managed to stop the fire and called for an ambulance,” the agency quoted an unnamed spokesperson for the Moscow’s local Interior Ministry branch as having said. The accident happened in front of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.

The man suffered burns over 25-30% of his body and has been brought to a local hospital, according to the source.

According to Russian mass media reports, the man was a Russian military officer who attempted to commit suicide in an act of protest against judicial bias. The man reportedly claims that he was dismissed several years ago in violation of the law, and has taken to the courts to defend his theory. His case has reached the Supreme Court.
