MOSCOW, September 19 - RAPSI. Moscow's investigating authorities are examining opposition leader Alexei Navalny's application alleging that police officers committed forgery and abused their power, his attorney Vadim Kobzev told RAPSI on Wednesday.

Kobzev said Navalny was detained during a rally in Moscow on May 6 for failure to comply with the police's orders.

In May, the attorney submitted an application to the Investigative Department to check the lawfulness of the police officers' actions. The department dismissed the application, stating that the court had established all of the circumstances and provided a legal assessment.

"The refusal to hold an inspection was disputed in court. Today, though, it became clear during the trial that the inspection has been held since September 7, although we referred to the department in May," Kobzev said, adding that this is the reason why the court ceased the proceedings.

He said it will be known whether a criminal case will be initiated following the inspection on October 7.

Clashes with the police flared up on May 6 during an officially sanctioned opposition march across Moscow. Dozens of protesters and police officers were injured. The police detained over 400 rally participants.

After May 6, the opposition continued its protests in the form of "people's promenades," as crowds of opposition activists strolled together peacefully through the city in a show of opposition. In June, investigators searched the homes of rally organizers and participants.
