KOSTROMA, May 16 -RAPSI. The court has ruled for a patient in his lawsuit against the hospital where he was infected with the HIV virus and ordered the hospital to pay him $33,000 in moral damages.

The court stated that the Kostroma resident was hospitalized after a traffic accident in 2006. He was operated on and remained in intensive care for an extended period, where he underwent several blood transfusions and was ultimately infected with HIV.

Medical experts concluded that the doctors supplied excessive medical treatment to him, as the blood transfusion was not necessary.

The court ordered regional healthcare institutions to pay the individual 1 million rubles ($33,000) in compensation.

The decision has not yet come into force and can be appealed.
