MOSCOW, March 21 - RAPSI. Moscow investigators have initiated a case against a company for polluting the environment, which resulted in a multimillion loss, the Prosecutor General's Office reported on Wednesday.

The Prosecutor General's Office conducted an examination based on the Environment Protection Department's application concerning nature conservation and land legislation violations by PoliEkoProm. The company deployed and exploited a solid domestic waste landfill.

"It was established that due to the company's non-accomplishment of measures to reclamate the landfill, the utilized wastes collapsed and its area increased by 6,900 square meters, which included area belonging to Moscow," the message reads.

According to the department, the state of urban soils deteriorated, the environment was severely damaged and the losses exceeded 132 million rubles ($4.52 million).

The prosecutor's check resulted in a criminal case for pollution. Such crimes are punishable by up to five years in prison.
