MOSCOW, October 19 - RAPSI. The European Court of Human Rights has awarded 11,000 euro in compensation from the Russian authorities to ex-police officer Gennady Shuvalov for assault and battery in a pretrial detention center, according to the court's website.

Shuvalov was sentenced to over five years in prison for drugs trafficking in 2006. In his complaint, Shuvalov said a pretrial detention center employee beat him with a rubber club in 2002. His injuries were only registered several days later when he fainted during a court hearing and an ambulance had to be called.

Shuvalov referred to the violation of an article of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
