VOLGOGRAD, August 28 (RAPSI) - The Volgograd Regional Court sentenced on Wednesday an active Al-Qaeda member to 4 years in prison for participation in illegal armed groups, the Federal Security Service's (FSB) regional department reported on Wednesday.

According to the statement, in 2012, Mamedov Shukuran Khanlar Ogly, the resident of Georgia, was detained in Volgograd.

Mamedov has participated in combat operations in the southern Russian region of Dagestan since 1999. He organized supply pipeline of money transfer from abroad for armed gangs, the department said.

The court found that the convict in 2010 underwent military and sabotage training in Afghanistan by order of Doku Umarov, who has been called "Russia's Osama Bin Laden" and is responsible for organizing a number of terrorist attacks on civilians. Mamedov also fought against NATO forces.

According to the FSB, Mamedov planned to come over to Dagestan, meet with the leaders of the Imarat Kavkaz armed group and fix up Russia's Caucasus militants with funds and ammunition on the reserves of Al-Qaeda.

Al-Qaeda is a global militant Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden in Pakistan during the period from 1988 to 1989.
